Bass, Dancehall, House … SLINK NYC’s rrao arrives on DJ Python’s Worldwide Unlimited label with a tight, rhythmically fluid triptych that assembles bouncy, tuneful tabla pats, harmonium drones and levitational raga vocals into foot-stomping, club ready structures.
“The Hara EP was written during a time when I was consumed by the color green. Hara being the Hindi descriptor for the color of grass or leaves. Whenever I would close my eyes I would see only green and I was exploring what that meant for me– what wanted to be born of that. I found that it hinted at the innate intelligence of the natural world and how we, as a part of it, must have access to something similar. How perhaps we could vividly experience that for ourselves- experience something unadulterated. I reflected on my role as nature and how infinity is natural- the fact that I am composed of everything that came before me, and how I will inevitably fold and be material for what comes next. I saw a longing within me to perceive that fully through both the heart and practicality. I thought about the brilliance of Indian rhythms, seemingly born of spirit, and wondered if that translated to our mathematics. I wanted to know what Indian scientists had to say and came across Srinivasa Ramanujan, “the man who knew infinity.” In relation to the equation it’s named after, “Ramanujan Prime” acted as a simplified path to exploring these things. As I worked on this record I saw a pattern emerging in the music of a sort of call and response. It led me to reflect on the inherent communication of the natural world and brought with it a hint that perhaps there’s something effortless here.”
