Frédérique Sueur – Le Temps Mutile Les Talons
USB003
Oustanding debut of DIY art-pop collage and private press synth-funk steez by a Parisian chartered accountant-turned-artist, worthy of comparison with Vox Populi!, John Bender and Funkycan via Ultra Eczema oddities.
Yep, this one’s the best type of dare-to-differ batshit. ‘Le Temps Mutile Les Talons’ presents the previously unearthed talent of Frédérique Sueur, who purportedly eases the boredom of days working in the La Défense business district of Paris by making these skewiff ditties during evenings after work. It lands as the 3rd release on lowkey Belgian label Undo Seat Belts, joining their curios by PAL and Cepren Synth with a charmingly distinctive sound lodged between the pop tastes of Belgian freak sanctuary Ultra Eczema, or the fringes of Stroom and Kontakte Group. Echoes of early vaporwave (before it calcified into crap) by Matrix Metals and Rangers via commercial VHS idents are evoked in the faded opener and cut ’n paste transitions of ‘La Défense’, and John Bender’s short-circuiting industrial/post-punk prototypes in ‘La Chien De Johnny’, and ‘Seconde Naissance’ and ‘Tu Penses A Quoi’ sounds like a lo-fi midi backing track producing by Paddy McAloon with Funkycan. There’s a mouth-watering morsel of Spencer Clark-like lush in the title tune, and the piquant melodic pucker of ‘Ultima Necat’ reminds of that Orphan Fairytale gem we can’t shake, while ‘Consuela’ leans hard on the nostalgia/hauntological buttons with a chef’s kiss emulation of gallic ‘80s romance via Shuki Levy’s cartoon soundtracks.
