V/A – Various Artists – Planet Love 2: Early Transmissions 1990-95
ST021-2
Young Marco yields another string of shine-eyed proto-trance pearls, twirling gems by Sven Väth, Dance 2 Trance, The Moody Boyz from all corners of the early ‘90s club.
Scanning a sound close to Marco's heart and which informs his own work, the set tours pivotal nodes of the post-acid house sphere when the style was in the process of delineatng or refracting certain aspects to taste. Namely these artists all focussed on the music’s eternal potential to seduce and entrance ravers, rather than drive them manic, deploying layered synth pads and rolling grooves that hark to certain aspects of Chi house and Detroit techno as much as prevailing winds of new age electronics, kosmiche krautrock and psychedelic rock that informed European trends. If we’re playing favourites, then Revelation’s ‘First Power (Domination Dub)’ is right up there (although the 8 min Computer Take Over version is even better), as is The Deep’s 1992 glyder ‘X O Surf’, and we’re also partial to the Italo disco prog of ‘Time Warp’ by Moodswings, the rushier lift of T.E.W.’s ‘Double Int’, and the lush beat-less scene setter ‘Free Flight’ from Lazer Worshippers. But let’s be fair, it’s all required listening for students of ‘90s dance music’s most romantic strains, and may well coax a residual gurn from those who were there at the time.
