Lisa Lerkenfeldt returns to Shelter Press with a hazed memory experiment that uses enhanced playback artefacts, acoustic feedback, and looped piano, cello and tape to build a network of subterranean mood tunnels on a sensationally blurred session that recalls the loop-finding wonder of Jan Jelinek, albeit in a more low-lit and submerged configuration.

Halos of Perception' was inspired by Cave Clan, an Australian "urban exploration" group who probe abandoned bunkers, tunnels and unusual spaces in search of hidden ecosystems. A chance encounter allowed Lerkenfeldt to absorb and ponder the strange acoustic, timbral and liminal properties underground, as well as lost cultural and historical dimensions, and the fallibility of memory. To enhance that feeling of being in-between worlds, Lerkenfeldt abstracts piano and cello phrases with irregular loop points, field recordings and kinetic drones that don’t quite follow intended trajectories . On 'Stairway to the interior' it sounds as if she's jamming in a cavernous tunnel, with wind rushing around the concrete as she plays. 'A fragrance of moss and chalk' is even sludgier, looping indistinct piano notes over waterlogged foley clanks. But there are cracks of light throughout: 'Cobwebs' finds glistening beauty in the system of caves and tunnels, and 'Amulet of sweat' pairs Lerkenfeldt's elegant piano playing with distortion, teasing the darkness with bright, dazzling sunshine. A beautifully nuanced moodpiece, ‘Halos of Perception’ comes highly recommended if you’re into anything from Ryuichi Sakamoto's gently glitched piano recitals to Erik Satie, The Caretaker, or Laurel Halo’s most recent piano abstractions.
