Placid Angles – 056 (The Lotus)
WHYT056
John Beltran’s beloved, Detroit house-inspired IDM project shores up on AD 93 with a mix of acid-laced ambient and patented, breaks-driven emosh dance gear shades away from Carl Craig
Just over 30 years since his seminal debut as Placid Angles for Retroactive, ‘056 (The Lotus)’ supplies classic-sounding Placid Angles gear illuminated with Beltran’s fine palette of strings and lithe percussion in four variegated works. After birthing the moniker back in 1991 as “feature”, and on a trio of albums int he interim, technically this is his first original EP as Placid Angles, breezing in classic form from the 303 laced choral pads of ‘A Perfect Swim’ to the sunny pizzicato string arrangement and dusted breaks of ‘Stormy Angel’, before really indulging the IDM bracket in a sort of D&B hybrid echoing Plaid’s Balil gear and BVDub in ‘Moonlight Sunset’, and the pendulous, plush post Detroit A.R.T.-style mood and groove of ‘Setting Suns’.
