Various Artists – Sky Girl

One of the past decade’s most charming, lowkey influential compilations, brimming with folk-pop, DIY new wave and art music micro presses 1961-1991 by Bruce Langhorne, Linda Smith, Nora Guthrie and many many more weirdos.

The record that really piqued interest around Melbourne’s Efficient Space, ‘Sky Girl’ is studded with gems that have since sunk into the diggers’ popular consciousness. One of those comp’s that transcends the sum of its parts, it sees DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery draw swooping lines across decades and styles to locate a mutual, down-home soul burn that warrants many return listens. Like a personal mixtape by your mate with an enviable record collection, the set yields nugget after nugget, spanning Karen Marks dream-pop tilt on the Sleng Teng rhythm thru to divine psych-folk substance in ‘Joanna’ by Once. There’s a country blues standout by Bruce Langhorne (session player for Bob Dylan) on the gorgeous ‘Leaving Del Norte’, nestled next to an instant ohrwurm in the shimmering new wave of ‘Sarra’ (1983) from Gary Davenport, sublime chamber folk from The Rising Storm, a symphonic string-backed ballad by Joyce Heath, and stepping post-punk jangles by Angel, each epitomising the range and depth of picks on offer. Trust it’s a proper go-to selection for a lokey pick-me-up or daydreaming sessions.
