Instant House (Joe Claussell) – Lost Horizons

Joe Claussell’s astral-planing ’93 deep house classic comes back into orbit on Isle of Jura, replete in stunning 17min original and component tools. Absolute magic for DJ Sprinkles nuts!

Just about as deep as it gets, ‘Lost Horizons’ pushes the boat out on stormy Martian seas for an irresistible dancefloor journey in the purest sense. Stemming from a relationship established by Joaquin “Joe” Claussell with Wall Street guy and keyboardist Tony Confusione, and Stan Hatzakis, owner of the legendary Dance Trax story that supplied all the city’s best DJs at the time, Instant House pursued the deepest strains of house music as spiritual ritual music. They concocted a trio of EPs before arriving at ‘Lost Horizons’ in 1993. Bookended by properly atmospheric storm field recordings, the A-side is a serious masterpiece eliding Claussell’s effortlessly rolling, latinate percussion with Confusione’s outstanding keyboard sax soloing for 17 minutes of dancefloor sex. Swept with FX and arguably able to go for thrice the length, the cut is just melt-on-the-mind bliss and a pinnacle of its artform that’s turning us to a mess right now. Factor in the trimmed back ‘Lost Horizons Version’ and Claussell cutting loose on the ‘Percussion Bonus’ and you’ve got a straight essentials. It’s disco, dub, concrète psychedelia all at once, if you want to break it down that way, or more simply deep house in the truest utterance of that style. A certified staple of the Sunday afternoon Body & Soul sessions run by Claussell with Danny Krivit & François K, and likewise heavily spun at David Mancuso’s Loft parties of the ‘90s: bone fide timeless dance music.
